In many companies, the system landscape of product data (TDM, PDM, PLM systems but also Excel and other "hidden" department-specific databases) has grown over time. Attempts to harmonize existing system landscapes often lead to an additional system. Product and process structures usually only consider the mechanical engineering processes - software, electronics, system architectures, functions, requirements are usually not integrated.
Digitization of engineering processes and the need to enable a cross-discipline product view require a rethink of the product process. More important than the optimal mapping of product information in a single system is the end-to-end networking of information from sales, development, manufacturing, after sales or customer service. This is because, in contrast to linking distributed digital models within a federated, semantic network, a separate PLM system is more inefficient. This is why PLM projects are not IT projects, but process projects.
The key to increasing efficiency lies in optimal collaboration between business units and the consistency of product data in the software products used. Manufacturing efficiency requires a special strategy to link the MES with business systems such as ERP and PLM.
